JABBIC – Judge A Book By Its Cover

Onyx Storm

Onyx Storm

Reviewed by Rebecca Yarros

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros has a striking, almost hypnotic cover—though it’s a bit busy. We’ve got clouds, suns, stars, geometric patterns, and, most importantly, dragons. And when a book gives us this many dragons, we can safely assume it’s about dragons. The small text “Brave the Dark” adds a bit of intrigue—suggesting danger, maybe an epic struggle against overwhelming odds. The cover’s detailed design does a good job of pulling us in, making us want to examine all the little elements to see if they hint at something bigger.

We also have to appreciate that, despite her bestseller status, Rebecca Yarros’ name is relatively subtle compared to other authors who make sure their name is the biggest thing on the cover.

That said, the title itself, Onyx Storm, reveals… absolutely nothing. Onyx is a cool word. Storm is a dramatic word. But put together, they don’t exactly spell out what’s happening here.

Based on the Cover, We Think This Book Is About…
A futuristic battle involving dragons. The title suggests something big, dark, and overpowering—maybe an unstoppable force of destruction. Our guess? The world (or galaxy) is at war, dragons are involved, and the bad guys are winning. Some brave heroes have to “brave the dark” to stop whatever this storm is before it consumes everything.
