This cover throws a lot at us—there’s a dragon, a ship, a boy in midair (flying? falling?), and a mysterious creature that looks like a baby griffin. It’s bursting with energy and color, which makes it exciting, but also a bit overwhelming. There’s not one focal point that draws us in; it’s more of a fantasy collage. That said, it definitely signals adventure and magic, and while we might wish for a little more clarity, there’s enough here to intrigue a young reader. If we were with a kid in a bookstore, they’d probably want to know what this wild scene is all about.
