The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

Reviewed by James McBride

‘The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store’ by James McBride. A grocery store that’s apparently celestial? Is it a place where angels do their shopping? What’s the deal? The cover has this abstract person with a basket, and the title is shouting at you with those big, bold letters. It’s like the designer wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it – not that you could if you tried.

And the New York Times bestseller tag – of course, because every book seems to be these days. What makes this grocery store so special? Do they sell ambrosia? It’s got that artsy, minimalist vibe, which probably means it’s deep and meaningful, or at least it thinks it is. If you’re into metaphors and grocery lists, maybe this book’s for you.  I’m just confused.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ Summary: “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride presents an abstract and bold cover that screams for attention. It hints at deep, metaphorical content, ideal for readers who enjoy a blend of the mundane and the celestial in their literary shopping carts.
