JABBIC – Judge A Book By Its Cover

The Nickel Boys

The Nickel Boys

Reviewed by Colson Whitehead

“The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead, has a cover that is minimalistic yet striking. A bold red rectangle dominates the scene, with two small figures in the lower right corner. It’s as if the designer said, “Let’s see how much empty space we can use and still make a point.” The two boys look like they’ve been placed on the world’s largest red carpet, but instead of glitz and glam, they seem to be contemplating some deep, existential crisis. Maybe they’re wondering how they ended up in this giant red square, or perhaps they’re debating the physics of their elongated shadows. The Pulitzer Prize badge is a nice touch—like a doctor’s diploma on the wall, assuring you that you’re in capable hands. Overall, this cover screams, “I’m important, read me!” while also whispering, “But I won’t spoon-feed you.”

JABBIC Rating: ★★★★☆
