‘Small Mercies’ by Dennis Lehane. What do we have here? Cops on horseback, a kid in plaid pants staring them down, and a shirt that says ‘Southie God’s Country.’ Yeah, because nothing says ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ like a standoff with mounted police. The cover’s split into this bold yellow and blue, like it’s trying to grab you by the throat and scream, ‘Pay attention, this is important!’ You can just feel the tension oozing out of this image, and you know this book is going to take you on a ride through some gritty, no-nonsense storytelling. If you’re looking for a book that promises to dive headfirst into the rough and tumble of urban life, this one’s got your name all over it. Just be ready for the ride!”

  1. Small Mercies (2023) is an intense thriller that takes place in Boston in 1974, when the city’s busing crisis was just getting started. The story centers around a single mother in the neighborhood of South Boston, whose daughter goes missing on the same night a Black man is found dead under suspicious circumstances.
